How to Take a Passport Photo That's Perfect for Your Dating Profile, Too

If you go to the Passport Photos section of the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs' site and read through all the regulations, you probably can't help but think that your passport photo will turn out bland. With so many rules to consider, we don't blame you. It's hard to imagine that your photo will capture your best moment, let alone be so good you'd even consider using it on your dating profile. However, we are here to tell you otherwise.

The key is to pinpoint the pieces you definitely shouldn't wear if you want your photo to be approved, as well know what will be most photogenic. Ahead, we've rounded up five tips for what to wear for your next passport photo to get that coveted seal of approval from you, the state, and maybe even some swipers on your favorite dating app.

High-Neckline Garments Are Your BFFs

Passport photos aren't the time to wear tank tops or low-cut silhouettes. We know they're extremely cute and flattering, but passport photos are cropped, so you might want to avoid looking as though you're just wearing your birthday suit. Stick with high-neck or collared shirts for a foolproof photo.

Consider Color

High-neck top? Check. Now, as long as it isn't an official work uniform or has a camouflage print, you're totally fine. Simply stick with any color that isn't white, because your passport will be taken with a white background, and you may end up looking like a floating head otherwise.

Wear Your Contacts

Last year, the rules regarding glasses changed. You may no longer sport your cool frames in your passport photos. Not to worry, though. Your contacts will save the day.

Keep Accessories to a Minimum

Speaking of accessories, keep in mind that your passport photo won't be approved if you're wearing a hat, headband, or any bold jewelry in general. Stick to a pair of small hoops, a stack of dainty necklaces, or something of the like.

Don't Forget to Smize

Now that you've managed to find an outfit that makes you feel confident and you're looking straight forward to the camera, your expression is key. Passport photos can go from cute to mugshot very quickly, so try to sit up confidently and smile with your eyes for the perfect shot.
