The Trends We Won't Wear With Jeans This Fall

Now that we’re well into fall, we’ve already shared the top runway trends to buy into this year, the coolest boot styles to add to your shoe collection and everything we’re buying under $100 (to name a few of our favorite recent fall shopping stories). Today we’re adding to the editor-approved list and spilling the season’s trends we won’t be wearing with you guessed it jeans. If you’re anything like us, you most likely wear denim on repeat, rotating your favorite pairs with cool new pieces and accessories. But you won’t spot us wearing jeans with the below items this season. To balance out what’s on our “pass” list, though, we’re also sharing the piece we’re most excited to wear with jeans over the next few months. Get to know our editors’ style better below, and be sure to show us how you’re wearing jeans this fall using the hashtag #WhoWhatWearing on Instagram.

“I feel like the ’80s trend of this season is better suited to skirts and trousers then denim, so I’ll probably be skipping that pairing. Instead, I’ll be wearing my jeans with all-things animal print—from bags to jackets to shoes.”

“Though highlighter-esque neon tones are gaining ground for fall, I’ll be skipping wearing jeans with the bright colors, instead giving the playful trend a more serious spin via tailored pieces like trousers and blazers. The tops I’m leaning way into with jeans instead are cropped cardigans—I love shrunken knits paired with high-waisted denim.”

“Maybe it’s my height, but oversize cardigans tend to look a little sloppy with jeans on me. Instead, I’m going for something cropped and sherpa-lined.”

“I won’t be wearing oversized hoodies or other athleisure-y pieces with jeans. I’d rather pair jeans with something more versatile that I can also wear to work, like a sleek camel coat.”

“This may seem odd but I don’t really plan on wearing western boots with jeans this winter. Of course, they’re the most obvious of partners, but I prefer to contrast the return of cowboy boots with a softer silhouette, such a midi skirt or slip dress. When it comes to styling jeans, I’d gladly give these sleek white ankle boots a spin instead.”

“I’ll probably skip wearing the prairie trend with jeans, because the look can run a little sweet. I’d prefer to toughen it up with trousers—a black patent pair would be ideal. I’m way down for wearing a super-bold colored sweater with jeans, though. I’m working my way up to neon, and right now this Play-Doh purple is the ultimate.”

“I'm over pieces that aren’t comfortable, so I’m saying farewell to super-tall heels. Instead, I’ll be wearing lower styles like these barely there sandals from The Row and faux-croc boots from By Far.”

“I’ll be opting out of wearing colored leopard print with jeans this fall. While the trend is definitely rising, I feel like wearing such a bold print with denim will come off a little too costume-y. Instead, I’ll stick with regular leopard print. Why fix what ain’t broke?”

“I probably won’t wear those crazy oversize sweaters this fall. Instead, I’m really into the idea of pairing super-loose jeans with cropped cardigans and knits.”
