Designer Ulyana Sergeenko Faces Backlash Over Use of N-Word

Fashion designer Ulyana Sergeenko and blogger Miroslava Duma are both facing backlash over their use of the N-word (both women are white). In a note penned by Sergeenko and shared on Duma's Instagram story, the designer wrote lyrics from a Kanye West song seemingly in reference to the fact that the duo is currently in Paris for Haute Couture Week.

Immediately, social media responded to the post, calling out the inappropriate language. The post has since been taken down after criticism from industry insiders and followers worldwide. Following the backlash, both women have issued apologies, which have also garnered criticism. Comments critique both women for their apologies and also reference a past incident involving Duma in which she was accused of objectifying the bodies of black women.

While the past year has been historical in terms of women raising their voices, it's racist actions like these that indicate how far we still need to go toward greater equality and respect in the fashion industry and beyond. Without intersectional awareness and a commitment from women (and men) of all races to support one another, we cannot improve. See the reactions below.
