On any given day, you can catch us waxing poetic about the trends we're spotting in cities like Paris and NYC, but today we're shifting our focus to another city with a huge fashion scene that hasn't gotten as much of our attention (until now): Tokyo. It shouldn't come as a huge surprise that Tokyo would be brimming with incredibly cool and original style. After all, it's the home to iconic designers such as Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake, and Yohji Yamamoto.

So in an effort to canvas what style in 2019 looks like at home in the U.S. and in different countries all over the world, we're highlighting the current trends taking over the Tokyo fashion front right now. Japan is historically known for its experimental and avant-garde aesthetic, and today that translates into a street style scene filled with a mix of both tougher trends like sporty sandals and softer styles like romantic puffy sleeves. Though both of those trends are seeing popularity in other countries, too, Japanese fashion girls are putting their own unique twist on them.

To discover and, of course, shop everything that's trending over in Tokyo at the moment, simply keep reading.

Sporty Sandals

Tokyo's style set happens to have this popular summer shoe trend in common with the U.S. as well. Chunky-soled sandals are clearly a favorite right now, and fashion girls in Japan are styling them with everything from miniskirts to cargo pants.

Whether on dresses or tops, puffy statement sleeves are the romantic trend gaining steam all over Japan.

Checkerboard Print

We can tell that the graphic checkerboard prints that are all over Tokyo are the Japanese version of the leopard prints that are blowing up stateside.

Sheer Pieces

The Japanese are known for having an avant-garde take on style, and for 2019 that translates to sheer organza and tulle pieces that fashion girls are layering over their solids.

Vintage-y Dresses

Nineties-era dress styles are taking hold in Tokyo right now, and fashion girls are favoring sweetheart necklines and dainty prints that look like they were plucked from one of the city's well-curated vintage shops.
