We Just Discovered the Australian Equivalent to Miley Cyrus
Iconic Australian fashion label Sportsgirl, has a knack for sourcing new and upcoming talent. In the past, the label has collaborated with Ellery and Aje, and helped launch model Zippora Seven’s career by featuring her in numerous campaigns. Now, the brand has tapped Australian musician Nicole Millar, to front its latest campaign, Get Dressed. The campaign features Millar dancing to a re-worked version of her latest single Signals (you can catch the video below), and modelling the latest range of dresses perfect for the party season.
Millar has had a busy year—performing at the recent Splendour in the Grass, and touring with Troye Sivan, but we found some time to catch up, and talk about our favourite topic—fashion. A quick scroll through Miller’s Instagram shows her off-beat style. It reminds us a little of Miley Cyrus—lots of colour, embellishments, and quirky motifs. What’s her approach to fashion? WWW: How has your personal style evolved over the years?
NM: I think as I’ve grown older I’m more comfortable in my own skin and I want to have more fun with what I wear. Definitely over the past few years I’m wearing a lot more colour than I would have. I’m obsessed with baby pink and velvet at the moment.
WWW: What was a game-changing fashion moment for you?
NM: When I started performing. I just started having more fun with fashion. I’ve started wearing knee high boots on stage which you would of never have seen me wear two years ago.
WWW: Can you tell us about a fashion risk you took that paid off?
NM: I bought these cool motorcycling pants that were pink and blue while I was in Japan in a vintage shop earlier this year. I thought no way will I ever have the guts to wear these but I wore them on stage at a gig and they made me feel very confident and looked pretty cool.
Who What Wear Australia: What inspires your style on stage and off stage?
Nicole Millar: I like my outfits to be fun, but also comfortable, black and white day to day, and lots of colour on stage.
WWW: Do you feel like you take more risks with your style when you’re performing?
NM: Definitely! When you're on stage you can get away with showing a bit more skin and being a bit bolder. I like that.
WWW: Where do you find cool new labels?
NM: Instagram is the main place I discover cool new brands. I’m always scrolling on there for new and cool designs from great up-and coming designers and labels.
WWW: Where are your favourite places to shop?
NM: Sportsgirl for all my basics and accessories. Got to have those! I like to mix basics with vintage stuff that I find in stores in like Luna Wolf Vintage and lots of those smaller Instagram labels.
