We Spotted 'Mum Sneakers' on the Streets of Sydney, and Trust Us, It's a Thing

Fashion Week Australia was full of fun street style trends, new and old. Like at other international fashion weeks, red made for the optimal statement colour and micro-bags took over—but one shoe in particular had us doing a double take. While dad sneakers ruled the streets of Paris and New York, Sydney seems to be leaning in the opposite direction. We’re talking about mum sneakers.

Hear us out. It may sound weird, but mum sneakers are actually like the more accessible version of the chunky 'ugly' styles that have become synonymous with the term "dad sneakers". Sleeker and more streamlined, but still giving off the same retro vibe and subtle-'ugly' allure, mum sneakers are the dad sneakers you can wear everyday, no matter how low-key your style may be. As if we needed more convincing to try the trend ourselves, Julie Stevanja, the CEO and co-founder of Stylerunner has us sold.

"We are seeing the retro sneaker trend continue with brands like New Balance selling well to the fashion set." Stevanja shared. “It's amazing to see how the fashion industry is embracing sneaker culture by mixing with high endlayering a feminine vibe to a traditionally male dominated product category. With luxury heavyweights like Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga jumping on the trend, it's here to stay." Point taken, and we couldn’t agree more. To shop the ones we saw at fashion week, read on to see our favourite trend-worthy iterations of the mum sneaker. The best part? You can also have them monogrammed with your initials at Stylerunner.
