The Who What Wear Australia team live in Sydney, so we feel like we have a pretty good grasp on how Sydney girls dress (because duh, we’re Sydney girls). We’ve debated the difference between Melbourne and Sydney style in the past (and it’ll be talked about until the end of time), but what we’re focusing on today is how Melbourne girls do winter—especially for a night out.
Let’s face it—Australia typically has a pretty mild winter, but temperatures do plummet further in Melbourne than in Sydney, so it’s essential to become an expert in layering and wearing the right fabrics that actually keep you warm.
We did our research and trawled through some of our favourite Melbourne-based fashion bloggers' accounts to figure out what they’ve been wearing to see them through this winter. Keep scrolling to take a peep at some of their best outfits, and shop pieces every Melbourne girl would love.
Erin Maxwell (of Love Shop Share) knows the importance of a faux-fur coat. When teamed with a simple white shirt and jeans, it can transform your look.
Jacquie Alexander, (of Because I Need It), dresses down dressed-up pieces like a slip dress with a puffy bomber jacket (the ultimate jacket to keep warm in) and sneakers—probably our favourite outfit combo this year.
Fei (of The Aesthetics) gets through rainy days by adding a hint of metallic to her look. And we're 100% taking this tip on board for the next rainy Sydney day.
Alyce Cowell (of AlyceAlyce) is a pro at doing what Melbourne girls do best—layering. A denim shirt and anorak will provide endless outfit options throughout the cooler months.
Kirsten Anderton (of The Fashion Faddist) proves that dressing for the cold is all about mixing textures. Leather on the bottom, and a chunky knit on top, is the perfect combo.
If stockings aren't your jam, then take a note at how Jessica Alizzi (of Jessica and Love) stays warm, without fully committing to opaque tights. Fishnet stockings. We predict they're about to blow up. The key to styling them, is to keep your outfit casual.
Jess Dempsey (of What Would Karl Do) adds colour into her wardrobe and dresses up for a night out by opting for a dress in a heavier fabric, like this lace Thurley number.
This fur coat will keep you warmer than you can even imagine.
Baggy denim is a wardrobe non-negotiable.
A lightweight denim shirt can be worn as a top, jacket, or in-between as a layering piece.
What you can't see, is that this jumper has the coolest side-ties.
This longer length skirt will keep you warm (even without stockings) due to its heavy fabric.
When wearing fishnet stockings, keep them from looking OTT by toning them down with sneakers or long-length layers.
Evening wear doesn't have to be any less feminine, just opt for different fabrics like a heavy, lined lace.
The key to wearing all your favourite summer pieces through winter? A warm jacket to throw on top.
