The Cool Trend You'll See on Every Beach This Summer

It recently occurred to me that sarongs are having a renaissance. First, I spotted the piece on Anna Vitiello—Who What Wear’s June Insta Muse—when she was traveling to Greece. It struck me as surprising since I haven’t seen them often in recent memory. Sure, I remember seeing them in years past, but I didn’t ever remember them looking so cool.

What really solidified it for me, though, was an Instagram posted by Net-a-Porter’s fashion director, Lisa Aiken, from a recent #jetaporter influencer trip to Tulum. In the photo, Aiken is wearing a black one-piece swimsuit with layered necklaces and a black sarong tied around her hips, and the caption reads, “The return of the sarong? Sí, por favor.” So this is a thing, I thought to myself. There are many people I look to in the industry for trends and style, but Lisa Aiken sits at the very top—what she says, goes. If you want to get a head start on the trend that is poised to break this summer, see the fashion-girl way to wear a sarong and shop our favorite styles ahead.

I first spotted the trend on our June Insta MuseAnna Vitiello.

When Aiken called out the return of the sarong, it solidified the trend for me.

Tap into French-girl style like Anne-Laure Mais and wear your sarong with a T-shirt, bucket bag, and cat-eye sunglasses.

Pair a black sarong with a bold color like this vibrant coral top.

You can create a new look with a long sarong by folding it into a short style.

Try wearing a sarong high on your hips with a bandeau swimsuit for a trip to the beach.

When in doubt, go monochrome. A head-to-toe look in one color always works.
