Trend Trial: We Road-Test One of Spring's Biggest Trends
I've always loved the elegance of a long, sweeping jacket—especially the drama of having it whoosh behind me as I walk down the street. A few years ago, I had a fire-engine red sass & bide version that I'd wear whenever I wanted to stand out—my friends would tell me I was 'peacocking' whenever I wore it, and I secretly loved it. Somewhere along the way, I lost my confidence, and stopped wearing pieces that turned heads. But it's time for that to change. If street style stars and celebrities can get away with wearing a dramatic jacket, then so can I.
One of spring's biggest trends, is the duster jacket (or kimono jacket, as it's also being called). The lightweight throw-over has been embraced by the fashion crowd, and worn with practically everything, which makes it the perfect choice for our first local edition of Trend Trial—where I'll take you through major trends each season, and show you how to wear them the real-girl way.
Keep scrolling, and I'll show you three different ways to incorporate spring's most fashionable jacket into your wardrobe.
What I'm wearing: Misha Collection Gelloma Silk Trench Coat ($420) (coming soon), Levi's The Vintage Perfect Tee ($35), Rachel Comey Freyed-Hem High Rise Culottes ($593), Deadly Ponies Mr Cub Molten Bag ($299), Epokhe sunglasses (coming soon), Adidas Superstar Sneakers ($130).
If I want to dress something down, my immediate go-to is always to add denim and sneakers. This silky jacket would look right at home over a black slip dress, but by adding more low-key pieces, the look is unexpected, and interesting. It feels like something I would easily throw on for the weekend, and still feel elevated, yet relaxed.
What I'm wearing: Boohoo Grace Waterfall Coat ($40), Ginia RTW Chloe Square Neck Cami ($120), Sportsgirl Carly Midi Skirt ($80), Senso Theresa Heels (coming soon), Lucy Folk Wild At Heart Clutch ($350).
When you can't think of what to wear, reaching for tonal pieces is the fastest way to look fashion forward. This look feels very classic with the midi-length skirt, and trench-shape of the jacket, so I made sure my accessories kept things interesting. The perspex clutch (which you're about to get a close-up of) really takes it to the next level.
I'll obviously be wearing my jacket like this at some stage, the 2016 way.
What I'm wearing: Zimmermann Winsome Robe ($795), Lonely Label dress (coming soon), Senso Niko Mules ($285), Furla Metropolis Bag ($649), Bauble Bar Phoebe Choker ($50), Epokhe sunglasses (coming soon).
I work in fashion, so this is very easily something I can wear to the office. If you work in a more casual environment, this is exactly how I'd wear the duster to work—layered over a long slip dress. Office more corporate? Consider keeping your colour palette more neutral, rather than playful.
Just because you're at work, doesn't mean you have to play it safe. A contrasting handbag (Furla has so many colours to choose from) will add detail, and make it look like you tried.
