The Secret Layering Trick That Makes Every Outfit Cooler

As the saying goes, two heads are better than one—which essentially means that some tasks are accomplished more easily by two people working together than by one working alone. In sartorial speak, the same can be said about sweaters. Two sweaters—when stylishly worn together—work collectively to produce a winning outfit formula. So simple yet effortlessly striking.

The fashion crowd can’t seem to get enough of this sweater-tying layering trick, which has been all over our Instagram feeds as of late. So let’s get to the nitty-gritty on how to pull off the cool look like our favorite fashion muses.

The idea is to exude an effortless layering aesthetic around your neck and chest area—less country club preppy, more languid, loose and drapey. This could mean wearing a type of scarf sweater, like the beautiful Céline by Phoebe Philo neck wrap sweaters we saw on the streets during S/S 19 Paris Fashion Week—admittedly a little harder to find on the market—but the perfect way to pull off the trend.

Another easy way to take on the trend is by tying two identical sweaters over one another as shown by our WWW UK Editorial Director, Hannah Almassi, below. To avoid the outfit looking too prim, be sure to let the second sweater you're tying drape loosely over the sweater your wearing.

And lastly, tying your sweater over a blazer is an easy way to nail the trend. Instead of tying the sweater over both shoulders, slip one arm of the sweater under your armpit and one over your shoulder as showcased below.
