Alessandro Michele knows the power of a collaboration, and Gucci and its creative director have pushed boundaries lately with a host of collaborations with some of the best international creatives. If you visited Gucci's Melbourne store in September, you can't have failed to notice the stunning Le Marché des Merveilles installation, which celebrated the launch of the jewellery collection of the same name, with whimsical illustrations by artist Phannapast Taychamaythakool. Then there's the Unskilled Worker collection, which is the result of the coming together of the brand and a UK artist. And looking forward to 2018, Gucci is collaborating with New York's Dapper Dan, who came to fame in the 1980s and was working high fashion into streetwear way before Kanye West.

Gucci x Phannapast Taychamaythakool

Art and fashion go hand in hand, and Gucci's use of illustrator Phannapast Taychamaythakool's fairy tale-like paintings in its Le Marché des Merveilles installation has us mesmerised.

The installations have been displayed at selected Gucci stores around the world, and were created to resemble mini theatres containing Taychamaythakool's illustrations. They're then decorated with jewellery from the collection, which includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings in gold or sterling silver adorned with precious stones and enamel.

Gucci x Unskilled Worker

“Sometimes I feel I don’t have much control; it’s almost as if they are painting themselves,” says artist @unskilledworker on the characters in her artworks that appear on the new Gucci x Unskilled Worker collection. The creative and captivating capsule features the distinctive works of artist Unskilled Worker—a.k.a Helen Downie. The brand's relationship with Downie goes back to 2015, when Alessandro Michele discovered her artwork on Instagram, and invited her to participate in an exhibition. The collection includes quirky portraits printed on sweaters and tees, floral gardens on pleated silk, and cult Gucci bags covered in bright butterflies. Fun is an understatement.

Gucci x Dapper Dan

We (along with the rest of the fashion industry) cannot wait for the 2018 launch of the brand's capsule collection with New York courtier, Dapper Dan. Huge in the '80s and '90s, Dapper Dan curated hip hop culture, designing for the likes of Run DMC, Mike Tyson, Salt and Pepa, LL Cool J and Bobby Brown.
