Tiered Skirts

We know that for many of you the phrase "tiered skirts" will instantly bring to mind the annoyingly ubiquitous prairie skirt of summers past, but we assure you this is a different look all together. Specifically, we're talking about (and loving) the profusion of above-the-knee skirts frosted with layers of tiered ruffles, as seen on the spring runways of Luella, Zac Posen, and Givenchy.

We spotted fashion-advice-giver Chloe Sevigny trying out the tiered skirt style at a charity event in New York last month and loved her look (check out her column in British ELLE, it's a kick). The combination of a graphic print crewneck shell with the mini-both by Proenza Schouler-is sophisticated, especially when worn with prim lace-up booties (Miu Miu, for the curious minds).

Whether you pick a skirt with full and flouncy ruffles or one with a few flat tiers, keep in mind that this item is seriously feminine. That said, it's best to balance the inherent sweetness of the tiered skirt with something sleek or structured for a modern (prairie free) look.

1. Elizabeth and James Jane Dress ($375)
Attention social butterflies: this might be the perfect summer cocktail party frock. The cereluean blue jersey fabric is a stunning colour and the spaghetti straps are demurely sexy. Plus, the placement of the tiered ruffles means they will flutter beautifully on the dance floor.

2. See By Chloe Colour Block Tiered Skirt ($360)
If you're looking for a flirty little skirt, we'd like to suggest this cheery mini from See by Chloe. The bright yellow ruffles contrast nicely with the neutral upper half of this skirt and the exposed back zipper adds a hint of toughness to the sweet style.

3. Vanessa Bruno Ruffle Hem T-Shirt Dress ($497)
The instant we saw this dress, two words came to mind: easy chic. This simple t-shirt dress from cult label Vanessa Bruno will give you a cool Parisian air even on the hottest days. It's casual enough that you could wear with flat sandals for brunch or dress it up with a killer shoe boot for night.

4. Topshop Ruffle Contrast Trim Skirt ($88.38)
While it was difficult to pick just one tiered skirt from Topshop's extensive selection, we really responded to this soft grey style. The skinny black piping trim on the edge of each ruffle is a really nice understated detail. Pair it with a body conscious black tank, big silver cuff, and some very high pumps for a no-fuss evening outfit.

5. ASOS Bow Front Full Skirt ($60.56)
This festive full skirt offers a large dose of style for a very reasonable amount of money. It's available in white or black (we think the black looks more luxe) and has an underskirt of netting, which means that the desirable full silhouette won't wilt with wear!
