Sleepy Hollow

Laced with director Tim Burton's stylish and supernatural flair, the 1999 flick Sleepy Hollow is one of the rare suspenseful films that can inspire the way we dress--and with Halloween on the horizon, we can't think of a better time to channel the movie's darkly romantic looks. The film is loosely based on Washington Irving's famous short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and takes place at the turn of the 19th century, an era that lends itself perfectly to Burton's fantastical macabre scenery and Victoriana-inspired costumes. Thanks to his vision, Sleepy Hollow's as chic as it is creepy, making it the ideal subject of this month's Currently Channeling story. The Cinematic Inspiration
The year is 1799, and police constable Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) arrives in the town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of brutal decapitations that have plagued the village. Sceptical of claims that the killer is a headless horseman who rises from the grave, Crane sets out to prove otherwise using technology and logic. There's a love story too: as Crane unravels the mystery, he finds himself falling for Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci), the daughter of a prime suspect in the case.

The Sartorial Story
The F/W 12 runways were full of ensembles that mirrored Sleepy Hollow's turn-of-the-century costumes. Gucci's monochrome look--the Black Cashmere Jersey Long Cape ($1960), Black Light Georgette Yoke Shirt ($1295), Black Jacquard Lurex Chenille Riding Pants ($1295), and Elizabeth High Heel Crocodile Riding Boots ($19900)--interprets Crane's somber uniform in a decidedly decadent way. And while there were no corsets or bustles in sight at Sonia Rykiel, the Diana Print Washed Crepe De Chine Dress ($3995, 617.426.2033), Felt Headband ($240, 617.426.2033), Mini Zipped Bowling Abby Bag ($1040, 617.426.2033), and Wedge Pumps ($755, 617.426.2033) exude the beautiful Van Tassel's innocent femininity. Get The Look
Rag & Bone Kutch Jodhpurs ($695)
Sleepy Hollow's antagonist is a headless horseman, so naturally, you can expect an equestrian reference in today's roundup like this piece that made the cut: Rag & Bone's luxe-looking jodhpurs in herringbone and leather, which would look amazing paired with an oversized, striped blanket coat, per the runway, or with a graphic crew-neck for a less dramatic look.

J.Crew Collection Ainsley High Heel Boots ($450) in Cabernet
Chances are you won't ever have to venture into the Western Woods in search of a sinister apparition. But if you did, J.Crew's burgundy boots would be a sturdy and stylish choice, particularly as the pair comes in one of fall's most popular colours.

DAY Birger et Mikkelsen Ruffled Silk-Chiffon Blouse ($210)
This shirt's romantic frills bring to mind the 19th-century attire Ricci wears in Sleepy Hollow, but the blouse is ideal for a modern-day professional when paired with a slim pencil skirt and pointy-toe pumps.

Topshop Velvet Cross Choker Necklace ($28)
Inject some gothic glamour into your outfit by styling Topshop's choker over a buttoned-up collared shirt.

Gerard Darel Cape Noire ($428)
Depp's uniform throughout the movie largely revolves around a black frock coat, so we're certain he'd approve of Gerard Darel's structured cape jacket. Layer it over a bright cocktail number for a sophisticated boy-meets-girl look.

Free People Floral Mesh Lace Dress ($128) in Black
The lace-like overlay of this dress speaks to the film's gothic style without looking costume-y. It might not be a turn-of-the-century look, but it's certainly head-turning!

Zara Satin And Pearls Box Bag ($90)
Ricci's Van Tassel, who plays the daughter of Sleepy Hollow's wealthiest man, would be all over Zara's ornate clutch. Come holiday season, the boxy bag will serve as an exquisite accompaniment to all your party frocks.

Byredo Rose Noir Body Lotion ($65)
We may not be as lucky (or stunning) as Van Tassel, who earns the affection of Depp's character. But at least Byredo's perfumed lotion, with its musky base notes, lends us a bit of her aura--part wide-eyed innocence, part darkly mysterious.--Tiffany Tse
