Is This Fashion’s Biggest Undercover Trend?

With fashion month almost over, it’s about this time that I sit down and figure out the trends that matter, mostly looking to street style, as it’s a good indication of what will resonate most with the customers of my store, Désordre. So what have I discovered? There is no ‘true trend’ right now.

Every girl I spotted on the street, was sporting something enviable. It’s an ‘undone’, anything-goes vibe, and I wholeheartedly believe that Australian girls started this trend. We’ve been doing the effortlessly layered thing for a long time, we wear everything with sneakers and we’ve nailed the messy-hair-don’t-care attitude, teamed with glowing skin. The best thing about this look is that you can easily turn it up by accessorising with an investment piece or something completely unexpected.

Keep scrolling for my top tips for a street style worthy look, to achieve that effortless, undone vibe (because we all know it actually takes at least a little bit of effort).

The thin silk scarf is still having a major moment since Chloé sent it down the runway in 2015. The 2016 way to wear it? Stick to a tonal colour that works with your outfit (I’m loving burgundy, nude, navy, black, and white because they go with everything), tie it whichever way you like, and voila!

For those who feel the silk neck tie is too girly, a bandana is your new best friend. Silk or cotton, you can put your personal touch to your outfit by tying it around your neck, head or wrist. Hermés is the goal.

Not just for the hem of your jeans, undone hems are not going anywhere. Sleeves, necklines, heavier frays like tassels add to the ‘undone’ vibe. I’ve never been great at re-hemming so I personally hope this hangs around forever.

Oversized men’s shirts have always been a classic, but a big shirt, with big sleeves, and exaggerated cuffs peeking out of an investment blazer or statement knit, screams chic.

Denim will never tire, and I know my first Who What Wear Australia post was all about denim, but old habits die hard. The vintage Levi’s 501 look is here to stay. It is the perfect cool-girl way to wear a super-expensive top, while still keeping it ‘real’ and undone for your day-to-day. Or sit front row at fashion week. (This may be one of my favourite things about fashion—the ability to make things work for any occasion. Case in point, one of Grace Coddington’s early Vogue covers included a haute couture top with JEANS—AMEN!).

Only bring your essentials. No one is running around with a giant bag anymore. A small statement clutch—or a bag with not much in it screams ‘low maintenance’. Only the models can get away with the big backpacks. (Extra brownie points if you can hold only a phone in a really cool case, and a diary).
