This Victoria's Secret Model Is Clearing Out Her Closet for a Good Cause
Every time we get the chance to glimpse into a model’s off-duty wardrobe, our attention is all theirs, and we’re making mental wish lists. We rarely have the chance to view the covetable pieces in their closets—let alone shop them. When supermodel and swimwear designer Bianca Balti does a wardrobe edit, she lists the pieces she parts with on Depop, a mobile selling app, for a worthy cause. 100% of the proceeds from the sales of her personal wardrobe pieces go to Lifeline Jordan, a UN agency for refugees. By paring down her closet to the essentials, Balti is supporting refugee causes, reducing her impact on the environment, and giving her well-loved items new life.
Balti admits she audits her closet often. “I receive a lot of presents. I like to wear them, but I don’t like to collect them,” she explains. “I believe in owning just the necessary amount of good-quality items instead of a million cheap pieces.” Her particular strategy for editing her wardrobe is keeping what she wears the most and letting go of what is superficial in her life. Balti, who describes her personal style as simple, has a covetable collection of fashion pieces but prefers to opt for more casual ensembles for day to day. “I love beautiful clothes, but I end up wearing jeans and a T-shirt all the time,” she confesses. “I adore a good designer bag and a pair of Vans.” She organizes her closet by style. “I have the casual winter-in-California section, which includes bomber jackets, jeans, and cool jean shirts,” she describes. “The summer Bohemian section is full of colourful Dolce & Gabbana dresses, and the date-night section is filled with sexy dresses and high heels.”
Balti says she has a story for every piece she sells, which range from tweed Chanel slides with flower appliqués to silk pajama sets in retro prints. “I really value clothes—they always mark a moment in my life,” she notes. “For example, the pajama set I wore at a family reunion in Italy.” Balti also plans on adding more prize pieces to the shop—so stay tuned. “I’ll also be putting red carpet dresses up for sale.” The one item you won’t find on sale in Balti’s Depop shop? “My cashmere sweaters,” she says. “They’re just too comfy to let go.”
Another wardrobe piece we probably won’t be seeing for sale anytime soon? Bianca Balti’s wedding dress.
