I Watched The Craft Last Night and Now All I Want to Do Is Wear Dark Lipstick
We get a fair amount of aesthetic inspiration from celebrity makeup artists and the looks they create for their A-list clientele, but it's an indisputable fact that movie characters from decades past serve as the ultimate living vision board for everything from iconic hairstyles to enviable makeup looks. A quick scroll down the ol' Instagram feed shows how pop culture icons from Almost Famous's Penny Lane to Margot Tenenbaum still inform the way we approach beauty to this day, but when I think about the film from my youth that made the most indelible impression, cult-classic 1996 release The Craft tops the list. A recent re-watch of this beloved relic of the grunge era reminded me just how badass a woman—even a wayward teen witch—looks in dark lipstick.
Yes, I'm one of those people who can't help but clock the makeup trends at play while watching movies. (Chalk it up to journalistic prowess.) But aside from their seriously scary spells, Nancy, Bonnie, Rochelle, and Sarah all knew how to work a bold dark lip. Just in time for Halloween and the incoming winter season, have a look at this curated edit of the lipsticks that would definitely appear in each young witch's collection. Because casting spells to make your bully classmate go bald is hard work, and lipstick is a must.
Sarah
You may be the new girl in the group, but little does everyone know, you're the most powerful of them all. You possess low-key telekinetic abilities and are coming into your own a little more every single day. A smattering of classic maroons is the perfect complement to your newfound power.
Rochelle
Your laid-back sensibilities are perhaps your most endearing quality, but to take your kindness for weakness is a big mistake. Huge. Deep nudes look incredible on you, but you also slay a blood red.
Bonnie
You present as quiet and reserved, but just beneath the surface is burgeoning confidence that will inspire you to seek the spotlight. Shades of purple will coax you right on out of the shadows.
Nancy
The supreme goth queen, you simply don't give a hoot what people think of you. After all, you're too busy trying to please Manon to even notice your classmates' jeers. You're an icon, sweetie, and don't you forget it. From the deepest blacks to off-the-wall blues, the shades that make you happiest are the ones that are the zaniest.
