We Can't Believe We're Telling You to Wear Shells This Season

by Lara Burnell

If the last time you wore shell jewellery was back in high school (and it was a souvenir from a summer holiday), chances are you're going to be a little bit confused by this trend. But trust us when we say it's been redefined, and it's actually really elevated (and cool).

Just as RUSSH Magazine fashion and beauty director, Billie Iveson forecasted back in 2017, the accessory trend is slowly but surely finding its way into our shopping carts this year. "This was a big trend on the runways (e.g. Prada A/W 17)," Iveson mentioned to Who What Wear Australia. How to wear it? "Think a mixing of materials, such as seashells that look as if you could have collected them yourself but on gold necklaces."

Buzzy label Albus Lumen, created by stylist Marina Afonina helped kickstart the trend in Australia last year, with a captivating Resort 2018 runway at Fashion Week Australia. The collection redefined Australian style, with linen pieces featuring mirrored shell buttons, and a jewellery collaboration (featuring shells) with Ryan Storer. Since then, the trend has only grown reeling in a number of designers from Isabel Marant to Ellery.
