The Next It Bag Is an IKEA Bag (We're Not Kidding)

It was only a couple months ago when the world was delighted—or at the very least amused—by a Balenciaga bag that so closely resembled an IKEA shopping tote. It was no wonder whether people would sooner run to their closest Swedish assembly-required furniture store to get the look for a fraction of the French fashion house cost. But now we can officially report that IKEA totes are not only still a part of the fashion conversation, but actually about to get a very cool makeover from one of the most exciting up-and-coming designers.

Virgil Abloh of Off-White—and most recently a CFDA Award nominee who took Bella Hadid to the event as his date—is officially giving the oversize blue tote an elevated look. “Some of you guessed it,” stated IKEA on its Instagram today. “@virgilabloh @off____white prototyping a fresh take on the FRAKTA bag in IKEA’s very own prototype shop in Älmhul.” The accompanying picture shows the designer—whom Hadid calls her “idol”—with a mustard-coloured tote with the word “SCULPTURE” written across the front.

“We’re in a moment where IKEA is transcending, and people are bringing this ‘do it yourself’ culture to the blue bag. What I’m most interested in is doing that process in partnership with the brand. It’s allowing me to put my opinion on a classic. It’s unique, and distinctly as much of off-white as it’s IKEA,” shared Abloh on the social media post.

Of course, if this new design is in fact as much Off-White as he claims, we wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the fashion set scooped up this bag to use as a certified It accessory. Good news: It can also help you carry around a few throw pillows, a fresh set of wineglasses, and a new sheepskin rug.
