The Special Tricks Stylists Use When Dressing the Under-18 Set

In a world where opinions fly left and right, styling a celebrity for the red carpet is a tricky task, and chances are you won’t please everyone. But styling a young person for the red carpet is even more difficult, as a new piece on Fashionista reveals. Why, you ask? Put simply, they “risk appearing too young, too sexy or too mature.”

Well, that isn’t surprising—but where, exactly, is the happy medium if all of those descriptors are ruled out? Writer Tyler McCall called in some of Hollywood’s top stylists to weigh in on the issue, and it was insightful, to say the least. Below, our favorite tips on how to nail it:

—Opt for elegant, streamlined dresses that don’t have fussy prints or too much detail.

—Don’t show too much skin, but don’t cover it all up, or you’ll risk looking too mature.

—Dresses and skirts in flirty shapes are a must, but make sure to hem them around the knee.

—Established brands like Miu Miu, Dior, and Louis Vuitton are stylists' go-tos for this age group.

—Younger brands should be incorporated too, though; stylists favor Peter Jensen, Emma Cook, and Self-Portrait.

—As someone gets older, it’s important to ease into sexier and more-sophisticated looks, rather than rushing it.

—There should still be room to have fun with the clothes—after all, these ladies are young!
