We're in a time of change, and fashion designers have started using their public platforms to drive awareness, and by extension are encouraging all of us to speak up and take a (sartorial) stand. Slogan tees were seen all over the S/S 17 runways. From Haider Ackerman's "Be Your Own Hero" shirt, to Dior's "We Should All Be Feminists" tee, one thing is for sure: This season, it's stylish to make a statement.

We know what you're thinking: "Florals for spring? Groundbreaking." Though put the Meryl Streep in Devil Wears Prada attitude aside for a moment, because the S/S 17 runway actually offered up a few fresh takes on floral. Retro-inspired florals, (which resembled stylish versions of seventies wallpaper prints) were seen in New York and Paris, while summery vacation-inspired tropical patterns were also very prominent on the runways—think of it as an homage to the Hawaiian shirt, only much, much chicer.

Deconstructed shirts, dresses and jackets will be everywhere this season, as S/S 17 is all about reinventing wardrobe classics to make them feel new again. Basic button-down shirts and blazers have been reimagined with structural edits, and dresses feature bold, new silhouettes. This season we're learning to embrace unexpected details.

This season the classic stripe has been given a graphic new update, as it’s been reworked in bold shades and exaggerated proportions. For the warmer months, we’ll be replacing the classic navy-inspired Breton stripe, with rainbow hues and larger than life lines. Horizontal or vertical? The choice is yours, just make sure you keep your colours bright.

Undeniably the most overtly feminine trend of the season, ruffles and frills will be seen on hemlines, necklines and sewn upon sleeves. The delicate appearance of the trend was further enhanced on runways when paired with romantic floral prints and transparent fabrications, though we suggest adding an edge to the style by combining your favourite frill with a leather biker jacket, or casual pair of sneakers.
