One Plus-Size Blogger's Powerful Message About Bikinis on "Fat" Girls

Meghan Blalock

When we posted this unretouched plus-size swimwear campaign last week, we noticed something really unfortunate in the comments section on YouTube: a lot of really negative, mean, and downright nasty speech about the woman in the video. And clearly, we're not the only ones taking note of this kind of hate speech.

Plus-size beauty and fashion blogger Loey Lane took to her YouTube channel—where she has more than 350,000 followers, by the way—to speak out on the negative comments she often receives when she wears bikinis in her posts. One by one, she goes down the laundry list of reasons people don't like to see plus-size women in bikinis: "they promote obesity," "they make other people feel uncomfortable," "no one finds them attractive," and so on. She then attacks each one with straight-up logic, and it's amazing.

"I'm told a lot that it makes people uncomfortable; seeing this much skin on a bigger woman makes someone else uncomfortable," she says. "But other body types are not told this. Thin women are not told to stop wearing whatever they're wearing because it makes someone else uncomfortable. So I'm gonna call bull on that."
