The One Piece to Buy Now to Update Your Wardrobe
In the Who What Wear Australia office, Net-a-Porter is one of our daily shopping scrolls—from affordable pieces, to luxury splurges, and the twice-yearly sale we count down for, there’s always something we can justify buying. Clearly, we love all things Net-a-Porter, so fashion director Lisa Aiken was recently visiting our shores for Fashion Week Australia, we jumped at the opportunity to pick her brain about what we should be buying right now, and the local brands on her radar.
Keep scrolling to read our interview and shop the one piece Aiken suggests buying to update your wardrobe for winter.
Who What Wear Australia: What three Australian brands are you excited about?
Lisa Aiken: I am very excited about Georgia Alice, P.E. Nation and Holly Ryan jewellery.
WWW: What are three major trends you spotted when you were recently in Australia?
LA: The trends I am most excited about include a new approach to minimalism and exaggerated proportions, interesting layering and various modern evening options.
WWW: What makes Australian fashion different? Why do you think this is?
LA: Australian fashion has a fantastic ease to it, it feels very spontaneous and is all about personal style. I love this as it's about the woman wearing the piece, rather than being about strictly following trends. Seeing major fashion pieces styled back to sneakers and teaming statement jewellery with minimalist outfits, are styling tricks that I have noted.
WWW: What trends should Australian women be buying into for winter this year?
LA: The idea of mixing street and sportswear pieces into your look is going to be one of the biggest trends of this year, we are already seeing tastemakers mix-and-match hoodies, bomber jackets and track pants with more elevated fashion pieces, it’s definitely a trend that is here to stay. The cult buys are from Vetements, Saint Laurent and coming soon to Net-A-Porter, Off-White. For those who don’t want to go as far as layering a hoodie under a blazer, invest in a fashion sneaker to wear with anything from a slip dress to a pant suit.
The other trends I am really excited about for transitional dressing include; the return of ‘maximalism’ with print and colour from Gucci, Stella McCartney and Chloé, shine for day or evening, and reworked shirting as an everyday update.
WWW: If you only bought one item to update your wardrobe for winter, what should it be?
LA: My instant update would have to be a Gucci accessory—either a decorative Dionysus bag or the slip on horse-bit loafers which have been updated this season in jacquards and prints. This was also one of the biggest street style trends I saw at Fashion Week Australia, teamed with anything from head-to-toe print to vintage denim.
