5 Easy Steps to Getting the Style You're Meant to Have
Oh, personal style—something so elusive where it can take years (or a lifetime) to truly nail down. While some of us have it figured out (think Alexa Chung with her cool, modern, and polished look), many of us are still on that never-ending quest to identify ours. If you fall in the latter group (hey, we’re right there with you!), we’re here to help. Below, we rounded up five easy steps to getting the style you’re meant to have.

Need a jumping-off point on your quest to find your personal style? First identify someone’s style you always love, and then go from there. Is it Rihanna’s quirky-cool look? Kendall’s downtown-chic vibe? Whoever you love, we suggest either printing out some of your favourite recent outfits of theirs (or make a Pinterest board!) and use as inspiration when you’re creating your outfits.
We went over the "three-word rule" fashion insiders use when getting dressed a few weeks ago. Essentially, it’s the perfect trick to help describe your personal style. How does it work? Think about your style in three words (polished, feminine, classic, bold, edgy, for example) and revert back to those terms whenever you’re stumped on what to wear. If you need more examples of words that could sum up your style, check out our cheat sheet.
You need the perfect clothes to help craft your personal style, right? While it’s totally okay to purchase items from anywhere, whenever you love something, we suggest curating your shopping go-tos and identifying the specific brands of retailers that speak to you the most (i.e., the brands you tend to wear more than others). Once you have your list of five to 10 stores, try shopping at just those places for a few months to hone in on your style.
Those women that have their personal style nailed down tend to have a uniform they stick to on rotation. Take Vogue Paris editor Emmanuelle Alt, for example—whenever you spot her in-between fashion shows, she’s consistently in an all-neutral ensemble consisting usually of jeans, a blouse, crisp blazer, and stilettos.
When in doubt, go with your gut—you know you best. If you’re loving a specific celebrity look (like Alexa Chung here!) or an item you spotted in one of your favourite stores, embrace it and run with it. Seriously—wearing what you love and what speaks to you will only help shape your style.
