This Gorgeous Handbag Just Sold for Over $100K
As if a Birkin weren't expensive enough (not to mention hard to find), a limited-edition Hermès bag that was expected to sell in the $60,000 to $80,000 range at auction actually fetched a jaw-dropping figure no one saw coming. Famed auction house Christie's sold the 2015 Bleu Colvert Porosus Crocodile Ghillies Birkin 35 for a whopping $105,250. It may not be the most expensive bag in the world—which is also an Hermès, natch—but the six-figure price tag is no chump change.
So what makes it so unique? For starters, it's an Hermès bag—and a crocodile-skin one at that. According to Caitlin Donovan, the handbags specialist at Christie's in New York, "Hermès utilises different types of crocodile when creating its exotic-skin handbags, and porosus is the finest of the skins it uses." This particular Ghillies style boasts two finishes of the precious skin in a stunning blue shade: shiny porosus crocodile for the body and a matte version for the trim. Of course, we can't forget that every Hermès beauty is handcrafted from start to finish by a single craftsman, and Donovan adds, "[This bag is] a very special bag for a seasoned Hermès collector."
