This "Controversial" Jean Trend Is Actually My Favourite
I pretty much live in denim. I’ve had a long-term commitment to skinny jeans and anything high-rise—and over the last few years, straight-leg vintage cuts have become essentials in my closet. I even had a thing for high-waisted bell-bottoms after spotting them on Emmanuelle Alt and the always-chic editors of French Vogue. But lately, there’s been one popular style I’ve been curious to try: the cropped flare.
At first, the cut confused me. They looked like too-short bell-bottoms that had been shrunken by mistake. And that ankle gap just seemed odd. At 5’ 9”, I’m on the tall end of the height spectrum, but I was still concerned that the jeans might have a shortening or widening effect. But the more I started to see them, the more these “controversial” jeans started to seem cool and super stylish. The unique cut has become more and more common on the street style scene, and fashion It girls like Giorgia Tordini and Gilda Ambrosio have not only been snapped wearing them, but they’ve also designed a pair for Attico, their high-end label.
When I finally gave them a try, I discovered that the challenging style is my new favourite cut of denim, and in my opinion, it’s one of the key silhouettes to try this spring. The key to pulling them off comes down to a few important tips.
TIPS FOR WEARING CROPPED FLARES
1. Hem them to the right length
They should hit the leg at the ankle or just below the calf. This is a time when your tailor is your best friend.
2. Pick flattering footwear
The shoe should always be carefully considered. You can’t go wrong with a pointed mule—one of my favourite footwear trends for spring. The lengthening style draws the eye down, and it makes your legs look a mile long.
3. Go minimal or maximal for tops
When choosing a top, you can either stick to something simple like a satin camisole paired with a robe coat. Or, you can go bold, and tuck in an eye-catching structural style.
